Time for a new rear end. Pictured below is a used Corvette series 4 carrier. Corvettes used 2 different rear end carriers depending on the gear ratio. 3.73's and below use a series 3 carrier and gears 4.10 and above use a different series 4 case.
The series 4 case is larger and is a thicker heavy duty casting. This goes well with my idea of building my Vette with the best severe duty parts I could afford. Being 2006 now, these series 4 cases are getting more rare every day. ![]() Limited slip differentials. In the 1950's and 1960's many manufacturers began to apply brand names to their LSD units. The most famous of these was Chevrolet's "Positraction". Since then, Positraction (often shortened to "positrac" or merely "posi") has become a genericized trademark for LSD's.
A Limited Slip Differential (LSD) is a modified or derived type of differential gear arrangement that allows for some difference in rotational velocity of the output shafts, but does not allow the difference in speed to increase beyond a preset amount. In an automobile, such limited slip differentials are sometimes used in place of a standard differential, where they convey certain dynamic advantages, at the expense of greater complexity. The main advantage of a limited slip differential is found by considering the case of a standard differential where one wheel has no contact with the ground at all. In such a case, the contacting wheel will remain stationary, and the non-contacting wheel will rotate at twice its intended velocity – the torque transmitted will be zero and the vehicle will remain stationary. In everyday use on typical roads, such a situation is very unlikely, and so a normal differential suffices. By limiting the velocity difference between a pair of driven wheels, useful torque can be transmitted as long as there is some friction available on at least one of the wheels. Corvette Rear End Codes
Below is a list of the Corvette rear end factory codes. '68 and '69 rears were identical except the leading letter "C" is ommitted. Otherwise they are the same.
![]() This particular used rear end carries the code of CAP, which translates to a 4.11 positraction unit. A not well known fact is that the positraction rear end wasn't standard equipment on Corvette's until 1970. Prior to 1970, the positraction unit was an option. ![]() ![]() The Bill of Non Rights.
We the sensible people of the United States, in an attempt to help everyone get along, restore some semblance of justice, avoid more riots, keep our nation safe, promote positive behavior, and secure the blessings of debt free liberty to ourselves and our great-great-great-grandchildren, hereby try one more time to ordain and establish some common sense guidelines We hold these truths to be selfevident: that a whole lot of people are confused by the Bill of Rights and are so dim they require a Bill of NON-Rights.
Bill of Non-Rights ARTICLE I: You do not have the right to a new car, big screen TV, or any other form of wealth. More power to you if you can legally acquire them, but no one is guaranteeing anything. ARTICLE II: You do not have the right to never be offended. This country is based on freedom, and that means freedom for everyone -- not just you! You may leave the room, turn the channel, express a different opinion, etc.; but the world is full of idiots, and probably always will be. ARTICLE III: You do not have the right to be free from harm. If you stick a screwdriver in your eye, learn to be more careful, do not expect the tool manufacturer to make you and all your relatives independently wealthy. ARTICLE IV: You do not have the right to free food and housing. Americans are the most charitable people to be found, and will gladly help anyone in need, but we are quickly growing weary of subsidizing generation after generation of professional couch potatoes who achieve nothing more than the creation of another generation of professional couch potatoes. ARTICLE V: You do not have the right to free health care. That would be nice, but from the looks of public housing, we're just not interested in public health care. ARTICLE VI: You do not have the right to physically harm other people. If you kidnap, rape, intentionally maim, or kill someone, don't be surprised if the rest of us want to see you fry in the electric chair. ARTICLE VII: You do not have the right to the possessions of others. If you rob, cheat, or coerce away the goods or services of other citizens, don't be surprised if the rest of us get together and lock you away in a place where you still won't have the right to a big screen color TV or a life of leisure. ARTICLE VIII: You do not have the right to a job. All of us sure want you to have a job, and will gladly help you along in hard times, but we expect you to take advantage of the opportunities of education and vocational training laid before you to make yourself useful. ARTICLE IX: You do not have the right to happiness. Being an American means that you have the right to PURSUE happiness, which by the way, is a lot easier if you are unencumbered by an over abundance of idiotic laws created by those of you who were confused by the Bill of Rights. ARTICLE X: This is an English speaking country. We don't care where you are from, English is our language. Learn it or go back to wherever you came from! (and lastly....) ARTICLE XI: You do not have the right to change our country's history or heritage. This country was founded on the belief in one true God. And yet, you are given the freedom to believe in any religion, any faith, or no faith at all; with no fear of persecution. The phrase IN GOD WE TRUST is part of our heritage and history, and if you are uncomfortable with it, TOUGH!!!! ![]() January 10, 2001-----------Its the middle of January, but we got a couple of nice days together. The area roads were dry and free of salt, so I ventured out for a run. My'70 performed flawlessly after a brief warm up period. Only bad part of the run was that there is NO HEAT in this Vette! Bubba disconnected the heater core and plugged the outlets. I don't plan to use it much in the winter anyway. I just couldn't resist taking her out to keep the juices flowing. I really need to thank my wife, Mindy for her patience and understanding through this reconstruction process.
![]() January 10, 2001-----------Here's a shot of the cleaned up engine. I added the LT-1 valve covers and Aluminum Billet breather. A much improved look when compared to the engine photo on page 3. I already have an L-88 air box air filter in the garage. Waiting to finish installing the L-88 hood and air box.
![]() January 10, 2001-----------Pictured above is the L-88 hood from Ecklers. The installation caused a little headache initially. The hood perimeter frame was hitting the radiator preventing the hood from closing and forcing the very front of the hood upward. Finally got the hood to fit as well as the stock SB hood it replaced(and the stock hood was far from a perfect fit!). As it turns out the SB hood was also hitting the radiator. This wasn't noticable because GM had notched that area which might contact the radiator. This hood provides much need hood clearance. along with the L-88 air cleaner assembly and air box, this should provide an awesome fresh air system.
